I went hiking in the forest with my son. During our walk, we suddenly came across this. It’s the first time in my life I’ve seen something like this, and I have no idea what it is. Can anyone tell me what this is? Check the first comment for the answer 👇

As my son Leo and I traveled deep into the old-growth forest, the cool morning air was heavy with the earthy scent of moist moss and decomposing wood. It was meant to be a typical weekend outing, an opportunity to get away from the unrelenting bustle of the city and see the serene grandeur of nature. Bright morning sunshine was filtered into shifting, dappled patterns on the forest floor by the canopy above, which was a thick tapestry of emerald leaves. We had been following a narrow, scarcely discernible dirt trail that wound between old, tall pines for about an hour. At seven years old, Leo had an endless supply of energy and an insatiable curiosity. He would sometimes dash off the path to examine odd rocks, fallen branches, and the occasional scuttling bug. The simple, unadulterated delight of a father and son connecting over the untainted beauty of the forest pervaded the lighthearted atmosphere.

The vast, lovely woodland suddenly contracted into a single, terrible patch of soil when the atmosphere abruptly changed.

Leo had been going a few steps ahead when all of a sudden he came to a complete stop, his little body as still as a statue. I saw his face lose its color. He backed up slowly and clutched my sleeve without saying anything. His eyes were big with a mixture of surprise and dread, and his knuckles were white. His lower lip quivered as he gazed up at me, waiting for me to identify the horror we were gazing upon. A quick rush of excitement shot through my veins as my own heart soared into my throat. I followed his frightened eyes to a pile of decaying leaves close to the base of a huge oak tree.

It was an unexplainable sight, rising straight out of the rich, black dirt. The thing was twisted, raw, and hideous, like a severed human hand in an unsettling way. Its red fingers were many thick, meaty projections that curled upward, shimmering with a slimy, sticky fluid as though they had just violently broken through the earth from some shallow, unholy grave. Near the base, the coloration changed from a vivid, frightening scarlet to a sickly, pale pinkish-white. It was a horrible sculpture that accurately depicted the hideous position of a hand reaching out from the ground in a last-ditch effort to get assistance.

The ensuing sensory onslaught added to the visual’s misery. A faint but distinct, nauseating stench of rot and decay filled my nostrils and made my stomach clench into a hard knot as we got a little closer. It had the identical stench of rotting flesh, which sets off the brain’s most basic survival instincts. A dozen horrible scenarios ran through my head. Was there a dead animal here? Was there a tragic human tragedy behind this? Normally so reassuring, the forest’s silence now seemed oppressive and frightening, as though the woods were holding their breath, anticipating our next move.

The world contracted to that small, gory patch of soil for a few excruciating seconds. The back of my neck began to perspire coldly. Even though my own thoughts was yelling at me to get my son and head back to the safety of the car, I had to project an air of serenity for Leo. I pulled Leo a little behind me and put a hefty, protective hand on his shaking shoulder. I inhaled deeply and steadily, attempting to overcome the first surge of disgust and terror.

With shaky fingers, I took my smartphone out of my jacket pocket and forced myself to move closer. Against the dark, shadowed vegetation, the screen shone brightly. I was already bracing myself for the worst, wondering if I would have to call the police and report a crime scene. I knelt, keeping a safe distance, and used the search engine to describe the hideous anomaly: crimson tentacle-like growth, foul-smelling mushroom that reached from the earth, and red hand-shaped fungus.

The answer I found seemed almost completely unbelievable, and the search results appeared swiftly.

It wasn’t a corpse, a creature, or the remains of a horrific assault. The terrifying thing we were witnessing was completely natural; it was a botanical wonder known formally as Clathrus archeri, but more popularly and vividly as the octopus stinkhorn or devil’s fingers. I read the thorough explanations of the fungus’s life cycle while staring at the screen. Before exploding into four to eight long, tentacle-like arms, the alien-looking structure starts out as a gelatinous, egg-like sac. The shimmering crimson material that appeared to be dried blood or body fluid was actually gleba, a spore-bearing mass intended to resemble decaying organic matter in order to attract flies and other insects that aid in the spread of the fungus’s spores.

An overpowering, exuberant feeling of relaxation replaced the strain that had clenched my chest. As my pulse rate gradually returned to normal, I let out a loud, breathless laugh, albeit it sounded unsteady and uneven. I grinned as I glanced down at Leo, whose gaze remained fixated on the hideous form.

My voice eventually steadied as I said, “It’s okay, buddy.” It’s not a monster. It’s simply a really peculiar kind of mushroom.

Leo glanced up at me, his gaze scanning my face for approval before a timid, bright smile appeared on his own face. Still holding to my sleeve, he laughed nervously but joyfully. Together, we knelt down and looked at the devil’s fingers with a renewed sense of awe instead of terror. In order to protect its own life in the thick, competitive undergrowth of the forest, we marveled at how precisely the crimson tentacles replicated the appearance and smell of something dead.

We stood up and resumed our journey along the meandering route after admiring the strange miracle of the natural world for a few minutes. The jungle no longer seemed as ominous as it did just moments before. However, as we continued, I noticed that I kept looking over my shoulder because of a persistent attraction. I was profoundly humbled by the experience. It was a stark, unforgettable reminder of how easily the natural world can pull you out of your everyday existence, turning an ordinary, tranquil walk in the woods into an unforgettable experience. It also served as a reminder of the lovely, peculiar, and occasionally terrifying mysteries that lie just beneath the surface of the world we believe to be familiar.
