The Universal Rule of Leftovers

Leftovers are one of life’s greatest mysteries.

When you cook dinner, everyone says they’re completely full.

“I couldn’t eat another bite.”

Ten minutes later, someone is standing in front of the refrigerator with the door open, somehow finding room for ice cream.

But leftovers?

Nobody wants those.

You carefully pack everything into containers, proudly place them in the fridge, and promise yourself you’ll eat them for lunch tomorrow.

Tomorrow arrives.

You open the refrigerator.

The leftovers stare back at you.

You stare back.

Suddenly, making a sandwich seems easier.

Three days later, the leftovers are still there.

By now they’ve become part of the family. You greet them every time you open the fridge.

“Hey, spaghetti.”

“Morning, chicken.”

You know you should eat them.

You even move them to the front of the shelf so you won’t forget.

It doesn’t help.

Then comes the moment of truth.

Someone finally asks the question everyone has been avoiding.

“How old is this?”

Silence.

Nobody knows.

Nobody wants to know.

At this point, opening the container feels less like preparing lunch and more like participating in a science experiment.

Eventually, one brave family member throws everything away.

Not because it looked bad.

Because nobody could remember what it originally was.

And here’s the amazing part…

The very next day, someone opens the refrigerator and says,

“Hey… where are those leftovers? I was actually going to eat them.”

Of course you were.

That’s exactly how leftovers work.

They only become delicious five minutes after they’ve been thrown away.
